A Message to Our Valued Customers and Consumers

As you are aware, we are in the midst of a voluntary recall of pistachios that were processed by our facility in Terra Bella, CA. The products which are part of the recall include all roasted shelled pistachios and roasted in-shell pistachios from the 2008 crop (and a small amount from the 2007 crop that was packaged alongside the 2008 crop) due to potential contamination with salmonella. We are also recalling raw shelled pistachios from the 2008 crop (and a small amount from the 2007 crop that was packaged alongside the 2008 crop) that are not subsequently roasted prior to retail sale. These products were sold from Sept. 1st 2008 through Mar. 25th 2009. Raw in-shell pistachios are not part of the recall. The brands packaged for retail sale subject to the recall can be found in the table below.

The recall is being conducted strictly as a precaution, in order to safeguard the health and safety of our consumers. To date, no confirmed illnesses have been reported that are conclusively linked to our pistachios.

We decided to conduct this recall after one of our customers found salmonella in a couple of boxes of roasted shelled pistachios. As a family-owned company that takes pride in our ability to consistently provide the highest quality products to our customers, we felt that a precautionary recall was the appropriate step as the investigation into the source of the salmonella continues. We know you would expect no less from us.

Wholesale Customers

A small amount of the 2007 crop which was carried-over and packaged alongside the 2008 crop production was included in the recall. We would like to make this clear to our Wholesale customers. If you are affected by the recall, you have already been contacted. Below is some clarifying language for our Wholesale customers to consider.

ONLY products with either "7" or "8" as the 4th digit of the FMO number, and packaged between Julian dates 245 through 366 and 001 through 084 and shipped after September 1, 2008, are included in the recall.

Please examine your stocks immediately to determine if you have any of the affected products on hand. If you do have products, discontinue distributing them and contact us at 559-535-6050 to make arrangements for the return or appropriate destruction of the affected products. If you distributed to other firms that have further mixed, repackaged or distributed the following bulk products, you should advise them to recall those products and contact FDA. If you are recalling products that we supplied you, we want to help you as much as we can.

If any of these products were sold to consumers, you or your accounts should contact those customers you know purchased the product(s). If the products were sold at retail, please post this recall notice prominently in the store.

For our Wholesale Customers, the following bulk items are subject to the recall.

Wholesale Customers & Consumers

The below recalled products packaged for retail sale have a "Best Before" date between Sept 03 2009 and Mar 26 2010, and the flavored pistachios have a "Best Before" date between Jan 14 2010 and June 17 2010.

The Kirkland Signature brand California Pistachios available exclusively at Costco, roasted and salted 4 lbs. bag has a "Best Before" date from Sept. 10, 2009 through Mar. 23, 2010, with the number "VIN63857" printed below it. These Kirkland Signature pistachios were distributed to the following states: CA, WA, OR, ID, UT, NV, HI, and AK. The Sam’s Choice brand California Premium Pistachios available exclusively at Wal-Mart, roasted and salted 16oz. bag has a "Best Before" date from Oct. 6, 2009 through Jan. 7, 2010, with a number from 2768C13XLA-1 through 3578B13XLA-3 printed below it. These Sam’s Choice pistachios were distributed to the Southeastern United States ONLY.

The following consumer sized packaged items are subject to the recall.

If you are a consumer and have any of these products, do not consume them. We recommend that you return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If you do not wish to return the product, you should discard it in a manner that prevents others from eating it.

This is the first ever recall for Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., which has been selling pistachios for more than 13 years, during which time it has never had any reports of salmonellosis. We are committed to producing the highest quality and safest product, which is why we have already implemented changes to our facility that speak to this conviction. Additionally, we are currently working with many food safety experts to implement new standards for the entire U.S. pistachio industry.
